Using Zomato in Teaching and Learning English

Technology has nowadays developed rapidly. Because of this rapidity, everything is expected to have a high digital literacy. Same as with selecting media in teaching and learning process. For us, a good medium is a medium which is not only focused on one condition and not monotonous for teaching and learning process.

We have chosen a medium which is unusual for teaching and learning process. As we are a teacher in the future, our focus is to teach English with unusual media but still effective in teaching and learning process and the medium is Zomato.

Zomato is a food directory application which is used for restaurant search and discovery service. For those who do not know about the Zomato, it is actually an application to read and to write restaurant reviews, to know the exact location of the restaurant, the menu, and you are allowed to upload a picture of the food that you had tested.

The reason why we choose Zomato as our media in teaching is that it provides four skills in English. Moreover, Zomato is quite eye-catching for students because of the icon, the food capture that could attract students, and it is easy to use. In addition, Zomato can promote students’ digital literacy and it is not difficult to get because the application is for free with only one click on download button.

As we have explained before, we could teach the four skills in English by using Zomato. Here are the step how we could use Zomato in the classroom activities:

1. Writing skill
For the writing skill, our focus is descriptive text. We ask students to describe the food, the ambiance of the restaurant, or the ingredients of the food that they have tested. For writing the review, students can click the pencil icon.
2. Speaking skill
After writing the review of the restaurant, students should present their review in front of the class. So, we expect this kind of activity could improve students’ speaking skill.
3. Listening skill
For the listening skill, students should listen carefully to what their friend is talking about. Students must take a note and give some respond by asking some questions related to what they have heard.
4. Reading skill
To enhance reading skill, a teacher could ask students to exchange their review and give feedback for each other. From the feedback, a teacher can measure whether the students can measure the comprehension or not.
The last but not least, we expect that teachers are able to use Zomato as an alternative media to teach descriptive text. For more information, you can watch the video of Using Zomato in Teaching and Learning English!
